A Piss-up in a Brewery

I have been following South Africa’s preparations (sic) for the 2010 Soccer World Cup with interest. Without being too sceptical, I personally think that Danny and the boys had no concept of what this “honour” entailed.

There are two related stories that are relevant here.

The first is the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Go and have a look at the official website here. China has spent Billions of dollars to make sure that this event happens absolutely perfectly. No stone has been left unturned. This is just one of hundreds of new buildings erected for this event, the CCTV Headquarters.

Too much smog? No problem, just ban all cars from central Beijing for a month or two before the Olympics. Now THAT is commitment.

The other story is the cancellation (postponement?) of the Josh Groban (who?) concert tour to South Africa. Why? well because of a disagreement with the local tour promoter who has apparently just cocked up the recent “lacklustre” Celine Dion tour.

Now I am sure that both of these entertainers are massive successes wherever they tour, but NOTHING, and I mean nothing, can compare to the logistics of a World Cup or an Olympics. Let’s face it guys, if we cannot even arrange small events like these (irrelevant) concert tours, how in heavens name can we be expected to successfully host a World Cup?

What with striking construction workers, the highest crime and HIV/AIDS rate in the world, squabbling (overpaid) officials and now resignations, what is FIFA thinking about? Go to Plan B, go immediately to Plan B, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Actually, I prefer Rugby anyway.
