Self Help for Dummies

OK, it’s time to indulge myself again with a shameless punt of my new book (still-in-progress), with a working title, “Self Help for Dummies.”

Obviously, before choosing this name, I Google’d it and there does not appear to be a book with this title. There was however a play by T. Gregory Argall and Todd McGinnis with this name, and I just used their poster as a working draft of what my book cover will look like. See the airbrush-butchered image below;

Obviously, I’ve also got to keep on the right side of Wiley Publishing who own the rights to the “for dummies” phenomenon.

A problem that I have with most self-help and motivational books, is that they are normally written by people who have survived some major traumatic event. Now I have nothing againts multiple amputees, rape survivors and victims of terrorist and great white shark attacks, but my problem is that the ordinary Joe, like you and I, cannot begin to imagine their experiences, and as such can’t relate to them. As a middle-aged procrastinator, the advise from someone who has survived being buried alive by an avalanche, will not help me get things done. I need the advise of a recovering procrastinator, and nobody else, whatever else they have survived, will be quite the same.

This being said, set out below the Index Page of my book as a teaser.

Chapter 1 So you’re a loser, now what?

Chapter 2 Climbing out of the hole. Ladder or rope?

Chapter 3 How to stay focused. Wow, did you see the rugby this weekend?

Chapter 4 Setting goals and making lists.

Chapter 5 What to do with all of these lists.

Chapter 6 Carrot or stick?

Chapter 7 Is it my imagination, or have I just achieved something?

Chapter 8 How to supplement your income by writing a self-help book.

Well, what do you think? Should I serialize this book in my blog?

  12. Hey Synaptoman,
Glad you liked the play cover. I spent a lot of time on it.

Since my graphic design work saved you some effort, I’m wondering if you’d mind doing me a little favour? A little quid pro quo?

In your introduction there where you mention our play, would you consider naming the authors (T. Gregory Argall and Todd McGinnis) of the play whose cover you’ve borrowed and providing a link to http://www.lulu.com/playingafterdark ?

It’d be very much appreciated as it might help sales of our play (a very funny comedy) in book form.

    Thanks

    Todd McGinnis

  13. Hi Todd,

    With pleasure. Done.

    Cheers
