Synaptoman, Thanks for your research and explorations into aquaponics. What do you do about the risk of bacterial infection of the plants and workers handling the fish waste water if you don’t digest or compost it before applying to plants? One told me to never mix the two water systems. I am in Atlanta, GA, USA.
Hi Bevan,
As far as I know there are no pathogens carried by fish that can be transmitted to either humans or plants. We use no hormones, anti-biotics, medications or pesticides in our Aquaponic systems. Cattle, chicken and other manure is applied directly to plants without composting. I physically swim in my fish ponds (with snorkel and goggles) and have had no problems whatsoever, although I obviously shower afterwards. I use composting earthworms in my growbeds to break down any excess solids that build up.
Hope this gives you some re-assurance.

Hi my name is Malcolm Meredith I have set up an aquaponics system and have had it going now for about 6 months, the fish are doing well now after losing quite a few – probably due to the fact that the water wasn’t ready yet, but the plants aren’t doing as well yet. they seem to grow well as soon as I put them into the growing medium but then start to get all stretched out and gangling especially the lettuce, thanks for a great site it has been quite informative, I am coming to Port Alfred in a week or so and wonder if it is possible to see your operation. Regards, Malcolm.
Hi Malcolm,
“Stretched out” and “gangling” could mean one of two things. Either you don’t have enough light (which is unlikely) or the temperatures are too high and the plants have gone straight to seed. Lettuce would definitely struggle in KZN summers. I’ll email you privately to get photo’s of your plants. It’ll be pretty easy diagnosing from there. I’m based in Knysna which is 400km from Port Alfred, but you are welcome to come and look at any time.

Hi Synaptoman!
We are a black youth of six based in Durban that has formed a Co-operative that deals in Agri-projects. We have recently stumbled upon the concept of Aquaponics and we were blown by the concept and believe that it is the next best thing in Agri-business. We want to go full scale into Aquaponics but don’t know where to start yet in terms of training, consultation, set-up process, funding and any other relevant aspects. In a nutshell, we need a mentor to guide through this project. I hope that you’ll be of great help to me Synaptoman. (cell number provided)
